BushLife in Tasmania

James Fenton emigrated from Ireland with his family in 1834, and from 1840 pioneered farming land on Tasmania's Forth River, clearing heavy forest by hand. After visiting the Yarra during Victoria's 1850s gold rush, he saw a market for timber and turned to lumbering on the Forth before retiring from farming in 1879.

He later wrote A History of Tasmania (1884) and this book, Bush Life in Tasmania Fifty Years Ago (1891) — his own account of pioneer work in the Devon district, covering early encounters with Tasmanian Aboriginal people, the murder of the district's first settler, bushrangers, a visit to Melbourne founder J.P. Fawkner, the gold-digging years, and the coal mining industry.
