Alison Alexander's biography of Max Angus — one of Tasmania's most significant artists of the 20th century, whose watercolours documented the Tasmanian landscape across a century of life from 1905 to 2012.

Angus was a meticulous and quietly prolific painter — not a flamboyant personality but a deeply attentive observer whose watercolours captured the light, the country and the character of Tasmania with great consistency over many decades.

He also wrote and published A Salute to Watercolour (1996), a history of the medium from Europe to colonial Van Diemen's Land, also available from The Book Cellar.

Alexander — author of the Companion to Tasmanian History and numerous other Tasmanian biographies — draws on family memories, letters and interviews to build a portrait of Angus's life and work that doubles as a social history of Tasmania across the 20th century.

At 248 indexed pages with colour and black and white illustrations throughout, this is a substantial and well-produced biography.
