Volume 1 — Van Diemen's Land: From the Earliest Times to 1855 (632 pages, published 1983) covers the Aboriginal peoples of Tasmania, European exploration, the establishment of the convict colony, the Van Diemen's Land Company, the Black War and the removal of the Aboriginal population, the convict system in detail, and the transition toward self-government.

Volume 2 — Colony and State: From 1856 to the 1980s (663 pages, published 1991) covers self-government, Federation, both World Wars, the Depression, the development of the Hydro-Electric Commission, the Franklin Dam controversy and the broader political, economic and social history of Tasmania through to the modern era.

Together the two volumes constitute the most thorough and rigorously researched single-author history of Tasmania available. Both volumes are out of print and increasingly hard to find — complete sets in any condition are scarcer than individual volumes.
