In 1908 Englishman Ernest Westlake arrived in search of Aboriginal stone tools. Whilst collecting some 13 thousand, he also believed he had found the remnants of an extinct race whose culture was akin to most ancient Stone Age Europeans. But he also encountered living Indigenous communities and unwittingly documented a living Aboriginal people with a complex culture and a deep past.
