Sarah Lloyd's exploration of myxomycetes — the slime moulds — published by the author in 2015.
Myxomycetes are among the most extraordinary organisms in the natural world: neither fungi, nor plants, nor animals. They exist as single-celled amoebae, then aggregate into a flowing mass that moves as a single organism in search of food, before forming fruiting bodies to spread spores. They inhabit decaying wood, leaf litter and bark — environments Tasmania has in abundance in its cool, wet forests.
Sarah Lloyd is a Tasmanian naturalist who has spent years studying and photographing myxomycetes in the field. This book documents her observations and photography — colour photographs throughout show these organisms in extraordinary detail, some of them looking more like science fiction than natural history.
At 102 pages, this is a compact but richly illustrated introduction to a group of organisms most people have never knowingly encountered, despite walking past them regularly in the bush.
