First published in 1976, this outline of the history of the Macquarie Harbour penal settlement covers its founding on Sarah Island in 1822 as a place of banishment for the colony's most difficult convicts, its eleven-year reputation as one of the harshest penal settlements in the Australian colonies, and notable escapes including those of Matthew Brady and Alexander Pearce. It also covers the 1834 escape of ten convicts aboard the brig Frederick, and the settlement's final years, when George Augustus Robinson used Sarah Island to hold the last remaining Tasmanian Aboriginal people — among them Truganini — before their transfer to Flinders Island.
