The Convict Days of Port Arthur – Illustrated with 19th Century Photographs by J.W. Beattie | 1990 [USED – SC – Good]

A pictorial history of the convict era at Port Arthur — illustrated throughout with 19th century photographs from the Beattie Studio in Hobart.

J.W. Beattie was Tasmania's most significant colonial-era photographer, whose studio documented the island's landscape, people and history across the late 19th century. His photographs of Port Arthur — taken after the convict era had ended but while many of the buildings and some of the participants were still present — are the primary visual record of the penal settlement and its world.

The photographs in this book include William Smith O'Brien's cottage (the Irish nationalist political prisoner transported to Van Diemen's Land), the Lady Franklin convict transport ship, and the underground cells at the Coal Mines — a remarkable visual primary source at an accessible price.

At 61 indexed pages, published 1990, this is a compact photographic record ideal for visitors to Port Arthur or anyone researching the convict era visually.
