Avoca sits in the valley of the South Esk River between Fingal and Conara, in country that was among the earliest settled pastoral land in north-east Tasmania. The surrounding district — St Pauls Plains, Royal George, Rossarden — was shaped by sheep and cattle grazing, timber getting, and later mining at Rossarden's tin and tungsten deposits.

The book documents the families, properties and community life of the district across 150 years.
