The history of the convicts transported to Australia on the ship Calcutta in 1803 — one of the earliest convict transports to the Australian colonies, carrying 299 convicts who were originally destined for Botany Bay but landed instead at Sullivan's Cove, becoming among the first European settlers in Van Diemen's Land.

A photographic record of the features of some of Tasmania's most historically significant private colonial estates — houses that have rarely been open to the public and whose stories are not well documented elsewhere. The authors gained access to properties across the island, documenting both the architecture and the families who have owned and lived in them across generations — from the earliest colonial period through to the present day.
