The North Western Football Association was formed at a meeting at the Formby Hotel, Devonport, in 1894, with founding clubs Devonport, Latrobe, Mersey and Ulverstone — and remains Tasmania's longest continuously running football competition. Originally the senior football body on the North West Coast, it became a junior/feeder competition after a breakaway group formed the North West Football Union in 1910. Over more than a century, more than 50 clubs from across the North West Coast have played in the NWFA, including Burnie, Penguin, East Devonport, Wynyard, Mole Creek, Wilmot, Barrington, Don, Moriarty, Sassafras, Melrose and Gowrie Park. From 1938 until World War Two, the NWFA played under Victorian Football Association rules, briefly making throwing the ball legal.
