Matilda Langley is a beautiful young woman living with her family in the highlands of Tasmania in the 1850s.

She falls in love with a sea captain and ends up with child. Disowned by her father, she flees from the family farm, and is waylaid by two masked men. While escaping the men she falls over a cliff. Because of her injuries, her clearly marked trail is found leading the river where she is presumed drowned.
