Convicts at Sea is an account of the voyages which carried some 10,223 convicts, tried in Ireland, to Van Diemen's Land between the years 1840-1853.

The history of the convicts transported to Australia on the ship Calcutta in 1803 — one of the earliest convict transports to the Australian colonies, carrying 299 convicts who were originally destined for Botany Bay but landed instead at Sullivan's Cove, becoming among the first European settlers in Van Diemen's Land.

This is perhaps the only extant diary ever written during the Australian penal era whilst its convict writer was imprisoned. John Ward, writing whilst incarcerated on Norfolk Island but formerly a groom to an officer gentleman, tells a story of thwarted love that he claims led him to a life of crime including theft, sexual assault and more. In telling the candid story of his downfall he exposes his own ruthlessness and lack of empathy. This is an out-of-print book in USED condition.
