Convict-era Port Arthur - misery of the deepest dye - tells the fifty-year history of Port Arthur, one of the most remote and feared convict locations in colonial Australia, through the experiences of individuals who lived it. Charles O'Hara Booth, an English-born army officer, served as commandant from 1833 to 1844, establishing a semaphore signalling system across the Tasman Peninsula and building Australia's first railway, a convict-powered tramway from Norfolk Bay to Taranna. Mark Jeffrey, transported for burglary, worked as gravedigger on the Isle of the Dead after years in the settlement's harshest punishment regimes. William Thompson arrived as the new probation system began, working the settlement's coal mines.

David W. Cameron draws on the words of convicts, soldiers and administrators to tell the story of Port Arthur's development, changing approaches to punishment, and eventual closure in 1877.
