Adamsfield – The Town That Lived and Died | Kathleen, Ralph & Timothy Gowlland | 1973 [USED – SC – Out of Print]

A history of Adamsfield — the remote mining township that grew up in the Tasmanian wilderness around the osmiridium fields during the 1920s and 1930s, and was subsequently abandoned.

Osmiridium is a naturally occurring alloy of osmium and iridium — two rare platinum-group metals used in industrial applications including the tips of gold pen nibs. The Adamsfield field, discovered in the early 1920s in the remote southwest of Tasmania, attracted hundreds of prospectors during the boom years, and a substantial township grew up to service them. At its peak Adamsfield had stores, a hotel, a school and all the infrastructure of a functioning community.

When the field played out the town was abandoned and gradually reclaimed by the bush — it is now one of Tasmania's most complete ghost towns, accessible only by rough track.

Written by Kathleen, Ralph and Timothy Gowlland and published in 1973, this compact booklet is the primary published history of the township and its community.
