John Wadsley's history of two connected aspects of the Claremont area on the western shore of the Derwent River — the Claremont military camp and the Cadbury peninsula.
The Claremont Camp was a significant military training facility in Tasmania — used for the training and mobilisation of Tasmanian soldiers across both World Wars and through much of the 20th century. The Cadbury peninsula, adjacent to the camp, became famous as the site of the Cadbury chocolate factory established in 1921 — one of the first Cadbury factories outside Britain, built in a purpose-designed factory town on the Derwent estuary. The two histories of the peninsula — military and chocolate — sit alongside each other in this book.
At 206 pages with photographs throughout, this is a thorough local history of an area that shaped both Tasmanian military and industrial life through the 20th century.
