The 47th Battalion in the First World War — one of the shortest-lived and most battle-hardened of the AIF battalions, the 47th was formed in Egypt in 1916 and disbanded two years later having suffered one of the highest casualty rates of any Australian unit. It was raised largely from Queenslanders and Tasmanians as part of the 12th Brigade, 4th Division.
The battalion fought at Pozieres and Mouquet Farm in 1916, was nearly encircled at 1st Bullecourt in April 1917, and suffered heavy losses two months later at Messines. At Dernancourt in March 1918, Sergeant Stanley McDougall of the 47th was awarded the Victoria Cross for holding the line during the German Spring Offensive. Following heavy losses, the battalion was disbanded later that year.
Tasmanian author Craig Deayton based this history on the unpublished memoirs of a Tasmanian veteran of the 47th, and travelled to France and Belgium on a research grant to trace the battalion's battlefields and the families of its soldiers — this was the first published history of the unit.
