Between 1841 and 1853 nearly 250 women were transported from Ireland to Van Diemen's Land for committing arson, a number out of all proportion to males transported for the same offence. Historian Dianne Snowden explains the why so many women were transported for committing arson, explores their motives and follows them to the other side of the world both as convicts and subsequently explores their experience when set free.
