We Were The First - early pioneering in north-west Tasmania and Trowutta

Seafield Deuchar (born Brisbane, 1886) studied at Cambridge before settling near Wynyard in Tasmania's north-west in 1916, taking up and clearing pioneering farmland near Trowutta. Though partially colour-blind, he was a largely self-taught painter, deeply influenced by his study of J.M.W. Turner's work, and his historically accurate paintings of the district are held today by the National Gallery of Victoria.

This book, illustrated throughout with Deuchar's own paintings, covers clearing the forest, building the family home, constructing a water wheel, early agriculture and exploration of the district, and the pioneers of Trowutta and the wider Arthur, Rapid and Roger River country, through to the district's more recent past.
