Compiled, printed and published by Henry Melville, editor of the Hobart Town Colonial Times and a persistent critic of Lieutenant-Governor George Arthur's administration — a campaign that saw him repeatedly fined and imprisoned, and his own fortune ruined pursuing compensation through parliament. Melville printed the Van Diemen's Land Annual from his Colonial Times office each year from 1831 to 1837; this 1982 Melanie Publications facsimile, numbered 129 of 200 copies, reproduces the 1834 edition, which includes an account of the colony's geography and population (then numbering about 27,000) and a chapter on Van Diemen's Land's Aboriginal people, documenting contemporary settler views including explicit criticism of the violence inflicted on them.
