An English translation of Jules Dumont d'Urville's accounts of his two great South Seas voyages — the Astrolabe voyage of 1826–1829 and the Zélée voyage of 1837–1840 — published by Melbourne University Press in 1987 in two volumes with slipcase.
D'Urville was one of the most significant French naval explorers of the 19th century. His first voyage in the Astrolabe surveyed extensive stretches of Pacific and Australian coastline and included time in Van Diemen's Land, where French presence and French place names left a lasting mark. His second voyage in the Zélée discovered Adélie Land in Antarctica — naming it after his wife — and completed further Pacific survey work before returning to France. Tasmania features in both voyages.
D'Urville's observations of the Aboriginal population of Van Diemen's Land during the Astrolabe voyage are among the most detailed French accounts of that period, and his scientific and geographic notes on the island are an important primary source for colonial Tasmanian history.
This two-volume set is signed by the translator — giving it additional significance as a collector's item alongside its value as a primary source.
