Francis Russell Nixon (1803-79) was appointed the first Anglican Bishop of Tasmania, arriving in the colony in 1842 and serving until ill-health forced his retirement in 1863. His time in office coincided with the final decade of the convict system and the growth of the free colony, and was marked by the inadequate provision of religious services to convicts, denominational tensions, and the need to supply a growing population with churches, priests and schools.

Nixon and his wife Anna Maria (nee Woodcock) were both artists and key figures in the promotion of art in the colony; Nixon was also an early amateur photographer, and his photographs of the Aboriginal people then living in exile at Oyster Cove are a significant historical record. In 1857 he published The Cruise of the Beacon, an account of his missionary voyage to the Aboriginal-European community on the Bass Strait islands. Keith Adkins draws on a large body of correspondence Anna Maria sent to relatives in England to tell the couple's personal story alongside the Bishop's public role, reproducing more than forty of the couple's own artworks along with portraits of them by other colonial artists.
