Alan Villiers' own account of his early years as a working seaman aboard the last commercial square-rigged sailing ships rounding Cape Horn, published in 1997. Villiers spent time in Tasmania during the formative period of his career — working as a journalist at the Hobart Mercury between voyages, and sailing from Hobart as a reporter with a Norwegian Antarctic whaling fleet.

The Set of the Sails covers the seafaring life that gave Villiers the material for his later writing: the daily realities of working a sailing ship, the discipline and danger of rounding Cape Horn, and life ashore between voyages in the last days before commercial sail disappeared entirely.

At 247 pages with an index and black and white photographs, this is a first-hand account from one of the very last men to work commercial sailing ships for a living, written by one of the finest maritime writers of his generation.
