Michael Flynn's comprehensive history of the Second Fleet — the convoy of six ships that transported convicts to New South Wales in 1790, carrying what became known as one of the most brutal and deadly voyages in the history of convict transportation to Australia.

The Second Fleet was operated by private contractors rather than the Royal Navy, and the conditions aboard were catastrophic. Of the 1,006 convicts who embarked in England, 267 died at sea and a further 488 arrived so ill and emaciated that many died shortly after landing — a mortality and morbidity rate that shocked even those hardened to the convict system and led to significant changes in how transportation voyages were managed.

Flynn's research — at 787 pages with a full index — is exhaustive. The book documents the ships, the contractors, the crew, the officials responsible, and most significantly the individual convicts themselves: who they were, where they came from, what happened to them. It is the standard reference work on the Second Fleet and an essential resource for family historians with Second Fleet ancestry.
