The Taylor family have owned Winton, near Campbell Town, since 1832 — one of Australia's most significant fine-wool merino studs, its bloodlines tracing directly back to the sheep brought to Tasmania by Scotswoman Eliza Forlong. In the late 1820s, Forlong walked across the German kingdom of Saxony three times, personally selecting the finest merino sheep to establish a new flock in the colonies. Her family settled at Kenilworth, next to Winton, and when the Forlongs later moved to Victoria, the Taylor family purchased Kenilworth and much of the original flock.

Vera Taylor spent 18 months archiving the historical papers held at the Winton homestead office — uncovering letters, diaries and documents, including handwritten correspondence from the Forlong family themselves — to write this comprehensive history of the merino and wool industry in Tasmania. She and her husband John also helped drive the 2013 installation of a bronze statue of Eliza Forlong on Campbell Town's main street. The book traces the story from early Merino sheep and the Forlong family's records, through Tasmanian sheep studs and wool production across the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries, wool manufacturing and Tasmanian wool brokers, to a closing chapter of facts about sheep and wool.
