The stories of eight convicts, from trial in England to detention and freedom in Van Diemen's Land: John Ireland Hyland and Harriet James, James Britton, Sophia and James Charles Gunyon, William Heard, and Isaac "Ikey" and Ann Solomon. Ikey Solomon, a notorious London receiver of stolen goods, is widely believed to be the real-life inspiration for Fagin in Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist — his life story also formed the basis for Bryce Courtenay's Australian trilogy and the 2013 documentary The First Fagin. After his wife Ann was transported to Van Diemen's Land, Ikey followed voluntarily, and his arrival in Hobart reportedly "created a sensation."
