John Bufton's account of Tasmania's contribution to the Second Boer War (1899–1902) in South Africa — referred to here by the contemporary term "Transvaal War," not to be confused with the earlier First Boer War of 1880–81. Drawing on soldiers' own diaries, letters and official despatches, the book covers the raising and service of Tasmania's contingents, including the Tasmanian Bushmen and the 1st and 3rd Battalions, and is particularly noted for its extensive photographic portraits of individually identified soldiers, alongside a full nominal roll and list of decorations and honours awarded.
