A popular account of the furred land mammals, snakes and introduced mammals of Tasmania, including the thylacine, by Michael Sharland — Tasmanian journalist, photographer and ornithologist who wrote the Mercury's nature column under the pen name "Peregrine" for 60 years, from around 1921 to 1971. Originally a Campbell Town local, he also served as President of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union (1949–51) and as Tasmania's Superintendent of Scenic Reserves (1947–61 or 62).
