An 1880 edition of one of Louisa Anne Meredith's best-known works on Tasmanian natural history and colonial life. Meredith — who lived at Cambria near Swansea on the East Coast for much of her life — was one of the most prolific writers and illustrators of colonial Tasmania, and her natural history books are among the most vivid first-hand accounts of the island's wildlife and rural life in the 19th century.
This volume includes eight coloured plates drawn by Meredith herself, along with other illustrations. The text covers the birds, animals and fish she encountered in and around her property, written in the personal, observational style that made her books popular in both Australia and Britain.
This copy has an 1889 prize presentation plate pasted to the inside front cover — adding a small piece of provenance to an already historically interesting book.
