A book about the artworks of landscape painter Simpkinson de Wesselow in Van Diemen's Land and the Port Phillip District, 1844-1848. Simpkinson (1819-1906) was the nephew of Lady Jane Franklin; he trained at the Royal Naval College, Portsmouth, and served as a naval topographical draughtsman before his appointment to the Rossbank Observatory in Hobart Town in 1844. In Van Diemen's Land he formed a close working friendship with fellow artist John Skinner Prout, painting alongside him until both left the colony in 1848. In 1900 Simpkinson donated his colonial paintings to the Royal Society of Tasmania.
