Second to None - A Memorial History of the 32nd Battalion AIF 1915 - 1919
The 32nd Battalion AIF was raised in Adelaide and Perth in August 1915 as part of the 8th Brigade, 5th Australian Division. The battalion arrived on the Western Front in 1916 and suffered a devastating baptism of fire at the Battle of Fromelles, enduring over 700 casualties in a single night. After rebuilding, it fought in major campaigns across France and Belgium, including the advance to the Hindenburg Line in 1917, the defence against the German Spring Offensive at Villers-Bretonneux in early 1918, and the decisive Allied Hundred Days Offensive later that year. The unit continued to serve with distinction until it was amalgamated with the 30th Battalion in October 1918 due to severe manpower shortages shortly before the armistice.
