St Joseph's, on the corner of Harrington and Macquarie Streets, is the oldest surviving Catholic church in Hobart, Tasmania. Built of local sandstone in 1841 under Father John Joseph Therry, it was designed by James Thomson — a former convict — and built with convict labour, with its tower completed in 1843. The first Mass was celebrated on Christmas Day 1841, and the church briefly served as Hobart's Catholic cathedral when Robert Willson was installed as the first Catholic Bishop of Hobart in 1844, ahead of St Mary's Cathedral's later completion.
