Commissioned to mark the RACT's centenary, this history was written by Hobart-based historian Nick Brodie — also author of The Vandemonian War, also in our stock. The Royal Automobile Club of Tasmania was founded on 21 March 1923 by accountant Raymond John Shield and lawyer Allen Crisp, a Gallipoli and Western Front veteran, starting with just 70 members. Later that year it introduced Australia's first roadside patrol service, with "scout mechanics" John C. Oldham and John Murray Philp riding out to assist stranded motorists. Granted Royal patronage in 1927 as the Royal Autocar Club of Tasmania, it took its current name in 1955, and today represents over 210,000 Tasmanians.
