For nearly two centuries, the port of Hobart, Tasmania has been served by rowing, sailing and motor boats that have been available for hire to take passengers and goods across the river, to points north and south, or to ships moored in the harbour. From the 1820s to the 1940s the men who performed theses tasks were known as watermen - this is a dedicated study of these men, their boats and the contribution they made to Tasmanian society.
