Beattie was Tasmania's most significant colonial-era photographer, whose studio documented the island's landscape, communities, industries and people across the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His photographs are the primary visual record of Tasmania before the era of widespread amateur photography — the towns, the people, the bush and the waterways as they looked to a professional eye between the 1880s and 1910s.

At 88 large-format pages, this is a browsable pictorial record of a Tasmania that has largely disappeared — useful as a reference for heritage researchers and enjoyable as a general pictorial history for anyone with an interest in how the island looked a century ago.
