Paul Edmund de Strzelecki, a Polish-born explorer and geologist, spent 1839–1843 surveying large parts of New South Wales, Gippsland and Van Diemen's Land on foot, during which he identified and named Mount Kosciuszko, Australia's highest peak. This book compiles the results of that survey — mineral assays, soil analyses and geological mapping — accompanied by a fold-out geological map, sections and diagrams, and figures of organic remains (fossils). It documents his early observations of the region's coal deposits and includes his account of an early gold discovery near Hartley and Wellington in New South Wales, which colonial authorities pressured him to keep quiet at the time.
The work was a landmark in Australian earth science, and Strzelecki was awarded the Royal Geographical Society's Founder's Medal for it. He became a British subject the same year it was published.
