Sue Abdullah's biography of Eileen Brooker — Tasmanian potter and painter, born 1922, and one of the most distinctive artists of her generation in Tasmania.
Brooker studied art in Hobart where she met fellow student and sculptor Oliffe Richmond — a relationship that would prove one of the significant artistic and personal connections of both their lives. Richmond went on to study in England, work as an assistant to Henry Moore, and succeed him as sculpture teacher at Chelsea School of Art before his death in 1977.
Brooker remained in Tasmania, building a career as a potter and painter whose work has become increasingly valued — her distinctive pottery is stamped with her name and is actively collected.
The book takes its structure from the people Brooker knew and worked with, the pottery she made, and the paintings she produced — weaving personal memoir with the broader story of Tasmanian art in the second half of the 20th century.
