Linda, in the Linda Valley on Tasmania's West Coast Range, was founded in 1899 to support the North Mount Lyell mine, becoming the terminus of the North Mount Lyell Railway. When the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company took over the mine in 1903, most residents shifted uphill to nearby Gormanston, and Linda's importance faded. The town is remembered above all for the 1912 North Mount Lyell disaster, in which 42 miners died after an underground fire — Tasmania's worst mining tragedy. Today only the derelict Royal Hotel, built in 1901, survives. Edward John "Rocky" Wedd shares his own memories of the town and its people in this book.
