Jorgen Jorgenson and the Aborigines of Van Diemen's Land with fold-out map HCDJ

Jorgen Jorgenson — Danish sailor, spy, self-proclaimed "King of Iceland," and convict — was transported to Van Diemen's Land in 1826. He worked as a constable and later took part in the 1830 Black Line, the mass civilian-military operation intended to force the island's Aboriginal population from their land.In 1837 he announced plans to publish a book on Aboriginal customs and society, but never completed it.

N.J.B. Plomley, a leading scholar of Tasmanian Aboriginal historical sources, discovered Jorgenson's unfinished manuscript in the Mitchell Library, Sydney, and published it here in reconstructed form, together with his own comprehensive commentary and notes covering Jorgenson's development as a convict, his role in the Roving Parties and their objectives, his relationship with magistrate Thomas Anstey, and his other surviving writings, including material from the "Braim manuscript." Appendices include Jorgenson's original 1837 book announcement, and the story of fellow convict Thomas Savage.

At The Book Cellar, we also stock The Usurper, Dan Sprod's full biography of Jorgenson — see Related Products below. Order two or more titles together and we'll combine postage into one parcel.
