Published by the Tasmanian Forestry Commission in 1985, this was the first update in over 40 years to the state's standard reference on forest insect pests, succeeding J.W. Evans's 1943 Insect Pests and their Control. Tasmania's forests, spanning altitudes of over 1,000m, form the basis of major paper-pulp, woodchip and sawn timber industries, with eucalypts the most important species alongside rainforest timbers and radiata pine plantations supplying the state's furniture and craft trades.

The book covers insect classification and biology, how insects attack trees, and identification and control of pests specific to eucalypts, wattles, rainforest trees, radiata pine, and ornamental and shelter trees, along with a dedicated section on timber pests and control measures, illustrated throughout with colour photographs. Authors Elliott and de Little were both working forest entomologists whose research into Tasmanian forest pests continues to be cited in scientific literature decades later; Elliott went on to co-author the national reference work Insect Pests of Australian Forests: Ecology and Management.
