Hydro Construction Villages Volume Three – Poatina, Gowrie Park and Strathgordon | Sarah Rackham | 1983 [USED – SC – Very Good]

The third and final volume in Sarah Rackham's series documenting the construction villages of the Hydro-Electric Commission — covering three of the most distinctive HEC settlements in Tasmania.

Poatina, on the escarpment of the Western Tiers above Longford, was built to house workers for the Poatina Power Station — a remarkable engineering project that brought water from the Central Plateau down through a tunnel driven through the face of the Tiers. The township was designed as a complete planned community, built rapidly in the 1960s, and is one of the most intact surviving examples of mid-century HEC village design.

Gowrie Park, near Quamby Bluff in the northwest, was built to house workers for the Mersey-Forth hydro development.

Strathgordon, deep in the Southwest, was the construction village for the Gordon Dam — the most remote and controversial of the HEC's projects, at the centre of the Lake Pedder flooding and later the Franklin Dam campaign.

At 72 pages with black and white illustrations, this is a compact but significant record of three communities that represent very different chapters in the HEC's history.
