Patsy Adam-Smith's autobiography of growing up as the child of railway workers in the Australian bush of Victoria's Goulburn Valley.
Adam-Smith moved to Ulverstone, Tasmania, as a young married woman, and later worked in Hobart for the Adult Education Office from 1960 to 1967 — it was during these Tasmanian years that she began writing in earnest, and this book was the result. She went on to become one of Australia's best-known writers, drawing especially on her years working aboard small trading ketches in Bass Strait and living among the Furneaux Islands mutton-birding communities, published in Moonbird People and There Was a Ship.
