Gone and Almost Forgotten – Jetties in Southern Tasmania | Dr Eric Guiler | 1998 [USED – SC – Out of Print]

Dr Eric Guiler's documentary record of the jetties of southern Tasmania — the small wooden structures that once served as the primary landing points for coastal communities around the Derwent estuary, D'Entrecasteaux Channel, Huon River and the islands of southern Tasmania. Before roads reached the more isolated parts of southern Tasmania, jetties were the lifeline connecting farms, orchards, timber mills and fishing communities to Hobart and the wider world.

Most are now gone — rotted, demolished or simply abandoned as road transport took over. Guiler spent years documenting what remained and what the records showed had existed, covering the coast from Schouten Island to Maatsuyker Island and up the Derwent as far as Wellington Rivulet and Howrah.

At 469 pages this is a dense and thorough reference work — text rather than photographs, with a few line drawings. Not a coffee table book, but an invaluable record for anyone researching the maritime and rural history of southern Tasmania, family connections to the coastal communities of the Channel and Huon, or the history of specific properties and landing places.
