Goitre Monitor is the first book in a trilogy on iodine and public health in Tasmania, followed by Iodophor (2020) and Seaweed (2022), both also in our stock. This book traces the early history of goitre and iodine deficiency in Tasmania — from the state's first European reports of goitre and Launceston General Hospital case records, through the earliest thyroid surgery in Tasmania, household nutrition surveys of the early 20th century, and the introduction of iodised salt prophylaxis — to the notorious Tasmanian thyrotoxicosis epidemic of the 1960s.

The book also documents the researchers behind this work, including Basil Hetzel AC — the Australian medical scientist whose research confirmed the link between iodine deficiency and brain damage in unborn children, and who founded the International Council for Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders, now working with the WHO and UNICEF across more than 100 countries. Hetzel was named an Australian National Living Treasure in 2004 and is credited with work that has protected an estimated 80 million newborns worldwide from iodine-deficiency-related brain damage. Includes oral histories from Tasmanian families and comparative notes on iodine deficiency in the Riverina district of NSW and in New Zealand.
