The book covers Alliston's wartime service across both the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy — the experience of destroyer command, the convoys and engagements of the Pacific and Mediterranean theatres, and the transition from wartime service to postwar life in Tasmania. The Three Hummock Island chapter of his life, raising a family in one of Tasmania's most remote and isolated island settings, gives this memoir a distinctive second act that sets it apart from most naval memoirs.

At 188 pages with black and white illustrations, this is a readable and personal account of a naval officer's life that spans two navies, two oceans and a remarkably varied postwar story.
