Daniel Solander: Collected Correspondence 1753-1782 | HCDJ Duyker & Tingbrand |

Daniel Solander, a student of the great botanist Linnaeus, sailed with Captain Cook and Joseph Banks on the Endeavour from 1768 to 1771 and went on to play a central role in classifying the natural history collections of the young British Museum. This landmark scholarly edition presents his surviving letters for the first time with proper scholarly rigour – texts given in their original languages (Swedish, Danish, Latin, German and English) alongside meticulously annotated English translations.

Solander's correspondence touches on many of the great scientific concerns of his time, from the classification of species to comparative anatomy and the European exploration of the wider world, and offers rare insight into both his working life and his warm, sociable character.
