A history of road building in Tasmania up to 1880, written by Lyn Newitt and published in 1988. The book documents how Tasmania's road network was built using convict labour during the colonial period — the construction gangs, the road stations and probation parties, the engineering challenges of the terrain, and the development of the major routes that still largely define how Tasmanians travel the island today.
Many of Tasmania's main roads and highways follow routes first surveyed and built by convict labour gangs in the early to mid-19th century. The Book Cellar itself sits on the Midland Highway at Campbell Town, directly beside the convict-built Red Bridge, and operates from the cellars of Foxhunters Return — a coaching inn built around 1830 to serve travellers on this same convict-built road. This book is the history of exactly that infrastructure, told at an island-wide scale.
At 332 pages with an index and illustrated throughout, it is a substantial and detailed reference for anyone researching Tasmanian convict history, road and transport history, or the development of specific routes and districts.
