An original 1912 first-edition maritime history detailing Commodore Sir John Hayes’ Pacific expeditions and his early mapping of southern Tasmania. Please note: This volume is missing the primary folded chart facing page 24 and is offered strictly as a working research copy.
Provenance & Points of Interest:
- Global Book-Trade Labels: Bears the tiny vintage labels of the legendary Chas. E. Lauriat Co. (Boston, USA) and Berkelouw Books (Australia) pasted inside the front cover, charting its global journey across the Atlantic and Pacific.
- True First State: Features the rare, small printer's errata slip neatly tipped in at the front.
Condition Details & Deficiencies:
- Published by Longmans, Green, and Co., London, 1912. First Edition. Hardcover, 340 pages.
- Missing Plate: Missing the large folding chart drawn by Hayes (1798) that should face page 24. All other 33 standard black-and-white plates and portraits remain present.
- Cover & Binding: Bound in original cloth with gold lettering on the spine only (front cover is unlettered). The cloth shows distinct edge wear and surface mottling. The internal text block is firm, but the front endpaper is starting to split along the hinge line (about a third of the way up from the bottom).
- Interior: Previous owner's details written neatly in the front, and light foxing mostly confined to the endpapers. The text pages remain clean and highly readable.
A good working reference copy for a local maritime researcher or family historian. Please check our extra photos showing the vintage bookshop labels and cover wear before purchasing. Contact Just Tassie Books if you have any questions.
