Buffett (1931-2017) served on the Norfolk Island Legislative Assembly from 1981, advocating for improvements to health care and social infrastructure, and was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 1998 for that work; she was also a noted scholar of Norfolk Island's own Norf'k language, publishing Speak Norfolk Today: An Encyclopaedia of the Norfolk Island Language.
