The 9th Battalion AIF was raised in Brisbane in August 1914, the first battalion formed in the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division. It was part of the covering force at the Gallipoli landing on 25 April 1915, and Lieutenant Duncan Chapman of the 9th is generally regarded as the first Australian ashore. The battalion served throughout the Gallipoli campaign until the December 1915 evacuation.
After returning to Egypt, it was split to help form the new 49th Battalion during the AIF's 1916 expansion, before moving to France in March 1916. Its first major action on the Western Front was at Pozières in July 1916, where Private John Leak was awarded the Victoria Cross. The battalion went on to serve at Ypres and in operations against the Hindenburg Line through 1917.
