Alice: A Tasmanian Story follows Alice McKimmie (nee Reeves), born in 1857 in South Gippsland, Victoria, the third of eleven children to an English father and Scottish mother, through her childhood in Tarraville, the gold rush settlement of Stockyard Creek, and a farm near Bairnsdale, told across two parts - the first narrated by Alice and her parents Thomas and Annie Reeves, the second by Alice alone.
In 1880 Alice married Robert McKimmie and moved to Tasmania, where the couple ran a pub in Launceston before settling in the mining towns of Gladstone and Zeehan, both newly built up around mineral discoveries, with fires, disease and childbirth all carrying real risk given how far doctors and hospitals were.
Author Jacinta Crealy is Alice's great-grand-niece; by her own account Alice's story had been "lost to time" within the family until she reconstructed it from documents of the period, combining biography and social history with fictional narrative to tell it.
